April fishing report, Best spring ever

Get em!

We are having an awesome spring this year. The weather is absolutely insane. And the fishing is off the charts good too. We had an early flush this year which is great because the giant influx of water won’t wipe out any spawning activity. We also now have increased closures on the upper reef section so fish can now spawn without being bothered. So overall a great combination of things that should help the fish out a lot.

Getting a lot of good ones lately, fishing is really fun right now

The Platte has been fishing great all the way from up by the dam to down below town. This has been a really nice change from the usual bad weather and having everyone crammed into the upper section of the river. Everyone can spread out and enjoy the entire river. It is stupid to not take advantage of this weather, lack of crowds, abundance of good water and great fishing right now. Summer is gonna get tough a lot of places with low water conditions. I would make time to fish now if I were you. Everyone is catching them! This is easily the nicest spring I’ve ever seen, and the fishing is exceptional!

The normal nymphing game has been really good lately. I’ve had quite a few days with single anglers in the boat and its been fairly easy to hit 70 fish. Worms, annelids, leeches, eggs, midges and baetis are all getting slurped. Even a couple of dry fly opportunities if you’re in the right spots. Streamer fishing has been good too. The lower river has been especially fun. We are getting a lot of bright sunny days but the fish still seem to be chasing. This is a fun time to do these lower sections while the temps are still favorable and moss is not an issue. The swing bite is good too. The mile is great, but every cheesedick from Colorado is there right now because fish are spawning and it’s hard to even just get a spot to swing. The reef has plenty of good spots too and you won’t get crowded like you will on the mile.

Bradon with a good one

Thermopolis is fishing really well too. Baetis, march browns, caddis are all popping. Fish are still spawning but there are plenty in the channels eating bugs. Streamer fishing and dry fly fishing is happening too, so if you want a cool combo, booking a day on the Platte and the bighorn would be a fun trip.
